Ruts in the Road This title refers to William James' analogy that neural connections build up like "ruts in the road". The more often our synapses connect via the same routes, the more likely we will veer toward those routes. Paths drawn on the screen should theoretically be entirely random, and thus with no reinforcement, the paths would remain hazy. The fact that a design appears reveals that the brain is orchestrating our task (either where to look for letters or how to get there). The emerging characteristic shapes created by the program are documentation of a mental process going on behind the scenes.
